Pinewoods has been a recreation area for more than 100 years
The first indication of Pinewoods Holiday Park being used as a recreation area is shown in a photograph dated 1900, showing ladies of the day taking part in a running race. They wore long black skirts, white shirts and large black hats. From the turn of the century up to the early 1930’s, Pinewoods was part of a farming area with the odd couple pitching their tent on the land, for the equivalent of 30 cents per week!
When the Speedy family decided the land should become a holiday park, the task of clearing the land to make room for the tents and campers began. In 1936, when camping ground regulations came into existence, bores were sunk for water supply with taps spaced at strategic points for people to draw their water. Pit toilets were dug using drain pipes, with a seat on top.
In 1949, Dudley Jones formed a company and took over the management. Mr Jones played films on the front green and before the screenings, Housie was held. At this time the Entertainment Committee was formed, which still runs to this day.
Seven years later, in 1956, a board of Directors was formed. Alongside Dudley Jones, the Directors comprised of Hugh Watt, Bill Robinson, Tom Rhodes, Ralf Wareham and Ray Dryland. Today the current Directors continue to work with the same enthusiasm these gentlemen displayed in the mid 1950’s.
